To me, traveling has always been about making connections. Because while the places we visit may be beautiful, the sights we see astounding, it’s the new connections we make that stay with us—and enrich our lives forever.
In fact, on my very first river cruise that took me from Prague to Budapest, the people I met impressed me just as much as the places I visited. There was no assigned seating at dinner, so each night I’d land at a new table and turn my dinner mates into friends. I met travelers from all around the world, and we swapped stories and laughs as the countryside rolled by.
Perhaps my favorite night of the trip, though, came when I got to connect with the crew.
After the elaborate guest dinners were cleared away, some of the crew would hang out on the deck for a late-night bite to eat. On the evening I joined them, I remember learning more about the pianist from France, the bartender from Greece, and the tour director who’d practically crisscrossed the world.
Soon, one of the crew brought out a portable grill and whipped up some grilled cheese sandwiches. It wasn’t five-star cuisine, sure—but it was a simple, generous act of camaraderie. Eating perfectly crisp grilled cheeses with the crew is a moment of connection I’ll never be able to replicate.
Moments like this are exactly why I’ve made it my mission to help travelers and group leaders make their own connections on bond-building group trips. It takes courage to step out of your comfort zone and explore someplace new—so my job is to make it easy to tap into your courage and embrace the new faces, places, and feelings waiting for you!
